Jawai Bandh Leopard Safari: Safari Experiences, Timings and Price

The Jawai Bandh leopard safari is a guided open-Gypsy drive through the granite hills around Jawai Dam in Pali district, Rajasthan. Upvan Jawai runs four safari experiences, from a leopard-focused drive through Andheri jungle to a candlelit high tea on the dam, each led by resident naturalists minutes from the reservoir. Every experience is ₹5,500 per Gypsy, for up to six guests.

What Is the Jawai Bandh Leopard Safari?

A guided open-Gypsy drive through the granite hills, caves, jungle and scrub surrounding the Jawai Bandh reservoir. Leopards here are cave-dwelling and unusually visible, often findable at rest in daylight on open rock. There is no fence, no gate and no park circuit.

  • Terrain: granite outcrops, caves, dense jungle, thorn scrub, farmland and the reservoir edge
  • Vehicle: open Gypsy with a resident naturalist, maximum six guests
  • Slots: morning and evening, timed to sunrise and sunset rather than a fixed clock
  • Access: no Forest Department permit and no seasonal closure; most safari ground sits outside the notified reserve, on community land
  • The reserve: Jawai Bandh Leopard Conservation Reserve, notified February 2010, 19.79 sq km, one of the highest leopard densities in India

Why the Dam Matters

Jawai Dam was built across the Jawai River in 1956–57 and is the largest reservoir in western Rajasthan. It is the reason this ecosystem holds what it does.

  • Water through the dry months concentrates prey, which supports leopard density
  • The shallows draw 200+ recorded bird species, including greater flamingos and bar-headed geese
  • Mugger crocodiles are resident in the reservoir
  • Granite caves above the water give leopards secure, cool daybeds within sight of villages

Upvan Jawai's Four Safari Experiences

Each experience shows you a different side of Jawai. Most guests combine two or three across their stay.

  • 01

    Jungle and Leopard Safari

The drive for guests who came for the cats. Your naturalist takes you into Andheri jungle, the stretch of Jawai so dense it stays dark even at midday, and then out across the granite to the sites where leopards den, rest and hunt. Along the way you hear the stories of these hills: which leopard holds which slope, and how the herding families here have made their living alongside the cats for generations.

  • 02

    Temple and Village Safari

Jawai's human story, told on the ground. The drive visits boulder-cut temples that local tradition dates to the Mahabharata and credits to the Pandavas, then the homes of the Rabari herders who share these hills with the leopards. It ends on the banks of Jawai Dam at a heritage high tea, laid out with floor pillows and mattresses, while birds work the shallows and crocodiles surface in the water.

  • 03

Maad Jungle and Kambeshwar Ji Temple Safari

A drive into Maad jungle, the land of sloth bears, with a climb to the hilltop temple of Kambeshwar Ji and its views over the country below. Maad is quieter and more wooded than the granite zones, and it is where you have a chance of seeing sloth bears, deer, mongoose and several species of reptile.

  • 04

Sundowner High Tea or Breakfast at the Dam

Not a drive so much as an occasion. Choose a sundowner high tea as the light goes copper over Jawai Bandh, or a morning breakfast by the water, both set up with candlelight and cosy seating on the dam. It suits couples, families and anyone who wants one slow hour on the reservoir without binoculars in hand.

How Much Does a Jawai Leopard Safari Cost?

Every safari experience at Upvan Jawai is ₹5,500 per Gypsy, with a maximum of six guests per vehicle. The price is the same whether two or six of you ride, so a full Gypsy works out to under ₹1,000 per person.

How Long Does a Jawai Safari Last?

Roughly three hours per drive. Drives run morning and evening, and start times move through the year with sunrise and sunset.

Summer5:00–8:00 AM5:00–8:00 PM

What Is the Best Time for a Leopard Safari at Jawai Dam?

October to March is the best window for most travellers. Days are mild, nights are cold and clear, and migratory birds are on the reservoir. Jawai has no seasonal closure, so drives run year-round.

SeasonMonthsWhat to expect
PeakOct–MarMild days, cold dawns, migratory birds. Books out first.
SummerApr–Jun40°C+. Shrinking water concentrates wildlife. Photographers' season.
MonsoonJul–SepGranite greens over. Fewest visitors. Some tracks are difficult.

How Likely Am I to See a Leopard at Jawai?

Sightings are frequent through the season and many guests see a cat on their first drive. But Upvan Jawai does not guarantee sightings and does not publish a sighting-rate percentage, because these are wild, unfenced, unbaited animals and no operator can honestly promise one.

What improves your odds

  • Take more than one drive, ideally across a two-night stay
  • Book the Jungle and Leopard Safari in both a morning and an evening slot
  • Visit October to March
  • Stay put at a sighting rather than pushing on to the next one
  • Let the naturalist work

How our guides conduct a sighting

  • Distance held; the animal decides how close the encounter gets
  • Guide-led routes only, no off-track pursuit
  • No baiting, calling or crowding
  • Engine off, voices down

A leopard that is comfortable stays in view longer. Good field conduct is the practical argument as much as the ethical one.

What Actually Happens on a Drive?

The morning drive leaves before there is much light. You will want a layer for the first forty minutes, because an open Gypsy off the reservoir is genuinely cold from November through February, and you will have taken it off by eight.

The track climbs into boulder country where the granite has weathered into rounded stacks and low caves, or drops into the half-light of Andheri jungle. Then your naturalist stops, cuts the engine, and listens.

How trackers read leopards on rock

  • Granite holds almost no pug marks, so tracking here is not about prints
  • Alarm calls do most of the work; peafowl and langur give a leopard away long before you see it
  • Cave use: which daybed a female is using this month
  • Territory: which slope a male has been crossing at dusk
  • Herd movement: where the Rabari flocks are, and where they are not going

Expect long stationary stretches. Guests who arrive expecting continuous motion find this strange for a day, then it becomes the part they remember.

Why Upvan Jawai's Leopard Safari Is Different

  • Four distinct experiences, so a second or third drive shows you something new rather than repeating the first
  • Naturalists who know individual leopards by territory rather than guesswork, and who have read these hills for years
  • Guides from the villages around Jawai Bandh, so a drive passes through country they grew up in
  • 4.9★ on Google, 250+ reviews
  • Featured in Travel + Leisure, Condé Nast, Forbes, The Hindu, Outlook Traveller and Luxury Travel
  • Minutes from Jawai Bandh, so morning drives do not start with a long transfer
  • No inflated sighting claims. We would rather under-promise and let the hills do the rest

The Rabari Coexistence

Herding families around Jawai Bandh have grazed sheep and goats alongside wild leopards for generations, with no fences between them and no tradition of killing a leopard over a lost goat. A big cat population survives beside people only where people allow it to.

Every sighting on a Jawai Bandh leopard safari rests on that arrangement, which is why the Temple and Village Safari takes you into Rabari homes rather than past them. Worth remembering when a Gypsy is idling fifty metres from someone's door.

Is the Jawai Leopard Safari Safe for Children?

Yes. Jawai is one of the few places in India where leopards and people share ground at this density without a history of conflict, and drives are conducted from the vehicle under a naturalist's instruction.

The honest caveat is attention, not danger. A three-hour leopard drive asks a lot of a young child, and the long silent waits that make Jawai work are hard to explain to a six-year-old. The Temple and Village Safari and the high tea or breakfast at the dam travel far better with small children, with temples to explore, crocodiles in the water and cushions to sprawl on.

What to bring

  • Neutral colours: olive, khaki, beige
  • Closed shoes, especially for the Kambeshwar Ji temple climb on the Maad jungle drive
  • Jacket, scarf and hat for morning drives Nov–Feb
  • Binoculars; most sightings begin as a shape on a distant rock
  • Long lens if you shoot; 200–500mm is the useful range
  • No perfume or strong scents

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a Jawai Bandh leopard safari cost?

Every safari experience at Upvan Jawai is ₹5,500 per Gypsy, for a maximum of six guests. That covers the Jungle and Leopard Safari, the Temple and Village Safari, the Maad Jungle and Kambeshwar Ji Temple Safari, and the high tea or breakfast setup at the dam.

Is the safari price per person or per Gypsy?

Per Gypsy. The ₹5,500 price is the same whether two or six of you ride, so larger groups get the best value: a full Gypsy of six works out to under ₹1,000 per person. Groups above six need a second Gypsy.

Which safari should I choose at Jawai?

For leopards, choose the Jungle and Leopard Safari. For history and local culture, the Temple and Village Safari. For sloth bears and other wildlife, the Maad Jungle and Kambeshwar Ji Temple Safari. For a relaxed occasion, the candlelit high tea or breakfast at the dam. Most guests on a two-night stay book two or three.

What is Andheri jungle in Jawai?

Andheri jungle is a densely wooded stretch of Jawai whose name comes from how dark it stays, even in daylight. It is covered on the Jungle and Leopard Safari, which pairs the jungle with the granite sites where Jawai's leopards den and rest.

Are leopard sightings guaranteed?

No. Upvan Jawai does not guarantee sightings and does not publish a sighting-rate percentage. Some Jawai operators advertise figures like 95%; treat those with caution. Sightings are frequent, but these are wild animals on unfenced ground.

How many drives should I book?

Two or three drives give you the best chance at a leopard and a fuller picture of Jawai, which means a stay of at least two nights. Booking the Jungle and Leopard Safari in two different slots doubles your leopard windows, and adding Maad jungle brings in sloth bears.

Do I need a permit for the Jawai leopard safari?

No Forest Department permit is required. Most Jawai safari ground lies outside the notified conservation reserve, and access is arranged through the property and local community permissions.

What is the difference between Jawai Bandh and Jawai Dam?

They are the same place. "Bandh" means dam in Hindi, so Jawai Bandh and Jawai Dam both refer to the reservoir on the Jawai River, and the region around it takes its name from it.

Can I book a safari without staying at Upvan Jawai?

Yes. All four safari experiences are open to guests staying elsewhere in Jawai, at the same ₹5,500 per Gypsy for up to six guests. Send your dates and preferred experience, and the Gypsy will leave from Upvan Jawai at your confirmed slot. Only the Full Day Jawai Safari is reserved for guests staying at the property.

When should I book?

As early as possible for October to March, particularly weekends and the year-end holidays. Summer and monsoon are easier at short notice.
